AURAL ATROCITES Vol. 1

A track-by-track review by Uncle Fred (9th September 2006)

========================================================================

1. Albert Fish Is My Hero - "failed rape / knife wounds"

I first heard AFISMH perhaps a year ago on his 3"CD "Multilation".
This track follows many of the same lines : short and to the point. Quality noise - quality vocals.
Still a little too short for me, but also a compliment, as it keeps me wanting more. MORE.
I want a full length AFISMYH vinyl record... and I want to play it many times over and over again.

This guy is good and he gets better every time I hear him.

2. Pure - "peter sutcliffe"

If you've got the speakers for it, turn this up.
A dirty simple rythmic beat with distorted vocals at its base.
Interesting and somewhat dynamic noise mixed in for good measure.
I want to hear more by this guy. Intriguing. To me, that is a very good compliment.

3. Gunt - "bukkake kamikaze"

Does not blow me away. Doesn't mean the track is bad by any means.
Does some very interesting things near the end, although the mix might be tweaked, at least in comparison to the tracks before it. But that is always a problem with compilations. I feel I need to hear more in order to make a decent judgement.

4. Slut Kull - "malevolent"

As always, top notch. Wonderful sample to begin the track with.
Misogyny can never really be played out as far as I'm concerned.
I'm interested in what the instrumentation was for this track.
Kind of sounds like there may be some Midi or computers, but I did not think that SK went that route.
Regardless, this is an excellent slab of noise. Good mix, EQ, power, etc... I just wish there were vocals / lyrics.
I recommend this mans stuff. If you're like me, it will put a smile on your face.

5. Plague - "invocation"

Begins with some chiming bells done in a basic hypnotic beat. Middle rumbling noise fades in.
Second line of noise filters in. Slowly increases in intensity and volume. Not as harsh as some of the other stuff on here.
A relaxing break, yet still plenty noisy. With time, could produce an excellent dark ambient/harsh noise hybrid.

6. Rotted Brain - "albert hofmann"

Difficult to form an opinion right off the bat.
I will say this: If this is a live band, I would very much want to see them perform.
Very chaotic - which could be good or bad - I think some shouted vocals would add a lot ot this.
I'm not sure how i feel about this track. Wouldn't mind hearing more in order to form a good opinion.

7. Pig Molester - "the sound inside a pig's mind"

Not what I was expecting from an artist called Pig Molester, but very cool. Would like to hear some vocals.
Fairly minimal and not particularly harsh. But again, very cool.
A man who is definitely comfortable with what he is doing. Another act I would very much like to see live.

8. Mutant Ape - "everlasting fight"

Very dynamic...and very cool. A really good mix of different sounds. Has that great style of being "almost rythmic"
but still chaotic and harsh. In other words, the delay effect is used. I love delay. Some political samples.
Good vocals - I'd like them louder and stronger though. A solid act through and through.
Never was I bored listening to this. Often changing..."mutating" throughout.

9. Torturing Nurse - "1000 met ton"

Back to basics blasting noise. Sounds more organic than many other acts, which I appreciate.
There are 2 guitars on this track - pretty much blasting feedback soaked wanking.
Kind of depends on if that appeals to you or not. If you are sick of guitar, you may not like this.
I'd like to see this group with some bass and drums and see what they could do. Could be rather cool.
Hard to say... Probably a good band to see live after several beers.

10 Cprl - "the boyfriend"

Not loud enough for the compilation. Otherwise a mix of samples and old 4-track recordings.
Should have been mixed better. A novelty, basically.

11. Eraitjaritjaka - "gnoame"

"The United States is a terrorist state" - manipulation of a loop of someone saying this. Pretty well done.
I wonder if this was done in real time or not. Hard to tell if this is representative of the artist as a whole or not.

12. Cryptic Weevil - "apostolic succession"

Being at the end of a compilation has some unfortunate consequences - i.e. you've just heard 11 somewhat similar
tracks and it is difficult for much of anything to really blow you away. Despite that hurdle, this is very dynamic,
mixed well, and definitely a solid slab. Computer sounding near the end, like a dial-up connection gone bad.

13. Hidden Track - (Order Of The Blasphemous Eye - "the fallen")

A very cool track and worth turning up loud to get all the subtleties. This man has some very high potential.
In time, I could see this turning into something really amazing. The vision is there. And thats the most important part.
I am very interested in hearing more material, and seeing this artist progress.
